Watch The Andromeda Strain 1971 Miles Morales conjures his life between being a middle school student and becoming The Andromeda Strain 1971. Then BBC2 closes down with Jayne Constantinis wishing us a very good night.A bad day to be human this Memorial Day when THE ANDROMEDA STRAIN infects the airwaves. The monsters, when they finally appear, are great, stop-motion animated brains and spinal columns, creeping around and throttling the remaining humans.īBC Genome (Both films): BBC Two – 15th May 1994 – 22:35Īfter this, there’s a trailer for Screen Two: Sin Bin featuring Kathy Burke. And because they’re invisible, we get loads of shots of random things being moved or knocked over as they move, like a horrific version of Michael Bentine’s Potty Time.

This is a much cheesier horror movie, memorable mostly for the final reveal of the monsters’ true shape (they spend most of the movie invisible). It’s a simple countdown, the oldest trick in the SF toolbox (a Thunderbirds favourite) but racks up the tension admirably.Īfter this there’s another film, the slightly less classy Fiend Without a Face. And the film doesn’t waste any of Crichton’s clearly mountainous research, and his ability to make all of his science sound vaguely plausible.Ĭox is right, in his introduction, when he commends the nail-biting nature of the climax, when one of the scientists has to evade poison gas and security lasers to shut down the imminent detonation of a nuclear bomb, the Project Wildfire’s last-ditch measure against the possible escape of biohazardous material. Most of it is scientists working through problems, albeit a lot of very grumpy scientists. I do wonder how this was achieved, and whether the animals were harmed. There’s a scene with a small monkey which falls victim, which genuinely looks like the monkey is dying (or at least losing consciousness).

There’s some slightly disturbing scenes where they’re exposing animals to the infection. The only familiar face (to me) in the cast is David Wayne. It spends an awful lot of time explaining all the security and safety protocols involved – like many Crichton works, it’s in love with the technology, but also loves when that technology fails. The film follows the return of a space probe to Earth which has brought with it some kind of infection which wiped out all but two people in a nearby town, and deals with the scientists tasked with investigating the probe and the infection.Ī long part of the film involves the scientists entering the secure and sterile facility.

It’s a very spare film, with a lot of reading of classified documents – like this one which reveals that alongside DARPA and ARPA, the government also has a research body called PARPA.

Happily, the film is shown in its full Panavision ratio. While he’s talking about product placement, does the fact that he keeps fiddling with his sunglasses suggest he might have placed a product himself? Or is it just satire? The first is The Andromeda Strain, based on a novel by Michael Crichton, and directed by Robert Wise, who also made the classic The Day The Earth Stood Still and Star Trek the Motion Picture.
